1920年3月16日生于意大利艾米利亚-罗马涅大区里米尼的小镇Santarcangelo。
22岁因参与反法西斯抵抗组织被投入德军集中营，开始写诗。30岁迁居罗马担任教师工作，结识当时身为德·桑蒂斯助手的艾里奥·佩特里，开启电影剧本写作生涯。
与意大利电影导演米开朗基罗·安东尼奥尼合作长达近40年，直至安东尼奥尼的最后一部电影《云上的日子》 ；与其合作剧本包括《夜》《放大》《红色沙漠》等。
晚年为希腊电影导演安哲罗普洛斯撰写大多经典艺术影片的台本，包括《永恒和一日》《雾中风景》《尤利西斯的凝视》《鹳鸟踯躅》《养蜂人》《塞瑟岛之旅》《哭泣的草原》《时光之尘》。
1983年他接待前苏联导演塔可夫斯基到意大利考察，并与其合作，冲破当时的意识形态 秋天的魔术师
隔阂，完成电影《乡愁》（Nostalgia），其间摄制纪录片《雕刻时光》（Voyage in Time），记录他们两人筹划该片时的相互交流、学习、探索。Piece of the Sky (1959)
