经过十年的舞台磨炼，于60年代重返影坛，以《赫德》一举获得了第36届最佳男配角金像奖，此后，他的演艺事业达到了一个新的高度。1979年，他再以《富贵逼人来》获得了纽约影评人协会最佳男配角奖和好莱坞外国记者协会授予的最佳男配角金球奖，而且第二次获得了奥斯卡最佳男配角金像奖。
